A new Captain, a new crew, a new quadrant to explore!

For over ten years, from the Borg attack at Wolf 359 through the end of the Dominion War to the collapse of the Romulan Empire in a failed revolt, the Federation has faced escalating conflict. Starfleet, in response, has become more and more a military organisation. Not everyone is pleased to see this.

Admiral Grekk longs for Starfleet to return to its original purpose: science, exploration and diplomacy. He has pursued his quest even through the dark, lean years of the Dominion War. It has earned him a reputation as an eccentric.

Now, in the eerie calm after the abrupt end of the War, as Starfleet tries to rebuild and the Federation struggles to remember what it was all for, the Admiral's lonely crusade gains new currency. Its ranks depleted from war, Starfleet needs new command officers, fast. The people of the Federation need a new direction to take them away from the horrors of the last decade. The Admiral's project is suddenly thrust from obscurity to center-stage.

So is born the Discovery Corps. Twenty-four ships, refitted and upgraded Nova-class vessels, are dedicated to the task. A starbase is built in the Pellastheeri Sector in the Beta Quadrant. Far beyond Federation space, past the Neutral Zone, up the Orion Arm toward the Galactic Core it is a lone outpost in a dangerous sector. Starfleet and the Admiral pull together experienced, seasoned officers with promising young officers and crew, to train them in the ethos of Starfleet's true purpose. The Discovery Corps will be a seedbed for the future!

One young Captain must find his destiny.

Lieutenant Commander John Thomas Arrington finds himself vaulted into the Captain's chair. Admiral Grekk plucked him from an aimless life in civil service, where his family has a distinguished history and tradition, because Grekk saw precisely the kind of man who could find greatness in Starfleet.

Arrington's choice of Starfleet precipitates a family crisis, exiling him from those he loves. His progress in Starfleet stalls as the Admiral's project takes a backseat to the Dominion War. He becomes lost and disillusioned. When the Discovery Corp is at long last launched, Tom is not at all sure of his abilities or confidence. So many have so much faith in him. Can he handle it?

Captain Tom Arrington must now rise to the greatest challenge of his life.
